Provinces: Campobasso, Isernia
Evidence of wine in Molise dates back to the Oscan and
Sabellic tribes that settled in the rolling hills between
the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines centuries before the
Roman conquests. Over the ages the hill people of Molise
had kept their rustic wines mainly to themselves to accompany
the vigorous, piquant foods of a region noted today as
a major producer of grain, olive oil and cheese.
Molise,
whose main city is Campobasso, was for decades a province
of the Abruzzi, contributing blending wines to that prolific
region as well as to Apulia to the south. In the 1980s,
the wines of Biferno and Pentro di Isernia became D.O.C.,
elevating Molise from the depths of obscurity. But production
of those wines remains extremely limited. Considering
the undeniable aptitude for vines of its sunny hillsides,
there is reason to believe that much more will be coming
from Molise in the future.
