Provinces: Bolzano, Trento
The northernmost region of Trentino-Alto Adige links
two autonomous provinces in gorgeous valleys flanked
by terraced vineyards that climb the slopes of the Alps.
Trentino (the province of Trento or Trent) and Alto
Adige (the province of Bolzano or Bozen, known as Südtirol
or South Tyrol) have combined forces to serve as a model
of winemaking efficiency. Both provinces are known in
Italy primarily for popular white Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay,
though Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Riesling, Müller
Thurgau, Gewürztraminer and Sylvaner can be equally
attractive.
Trentino, which pioneered sparkling wines
by the Champagne method, remains a leader with Trento
D.O.C. Yet, despite growing demand for whites, the emphasis
remains on reds in the light and zesty Santa Maddalena
and Caldaro that have been popular for decades in central
Europe. Reds of depth and style have also come from Alto
Adige’s native Lagrein and Trentino’s Teroldego,
as well as Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot Nero.
The wines
of Alto Adige/Südtiroler may be labelled in Italian
or German.
