Description

What kind of wine it is

Barolo di Villa da Filicaja is a full-bodied red wine produced exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. It stands out for its harmonious and complex style, with fermentation and maceration lasting 14-16 days at controlled temperatures, followed by a long aging period of 38 months in oak barrels, at least 18 of which in French oak. The result is a rich profile featuring silky tannins and an elegant personality, suitable for long aging.

Where it comes from

This Barolo originates in Piedmont, in the historic area that includes Castiglione Falletto, Cherasco, Diano d’Alba, Verduno, and Grinzane Cavour. The calcareous-marl soils and the continental climate, marked by significant temperature swings, favor the development of distinct aromas. The vineyards, situated between 250 and 350 meters above sea level, enjoy sunny exposures and cool breezes that enhance the wine’s complexity.

How it is made

The Nebbiolo grapes are harvested by hand in October, selecting only the best bunches. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with skin contact for 14-16 days at 28-30 °C, to extract color and varietal aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 38 months in wood, with at least 18 months in French oak barrels and the remainder in barrels of various sizes, then rests in bottle to harmonize profiles.

Tasting notes

Visually, Barolo di Villa da Filicaja displays an intense garnet color with orange reflections. On the nose, it opens with a floral bouquet of violets, small red fruits, and hints of leather. The palate is structured and harmonious, with polished tannins providing smoothness and depth. The finish is persistent, with echoes of ripe red fruit, sweet spices, and subtle vanilla notes.

Food pairings

This Barolo pairs beautifully with first courses featuring mushrooms, such as tagliatelle with porcini and tajarin with Piedmontese ragù. It shows its character with aged cheeses typical of Piedmont and with Alba white truffle. The wine’s structure also matches well with braised red meats and stewed game, enhancing rich dishes thanks to the freshness of its tannins.

When to serve it

Barolo di Villa da Filicaja has significant aging potential and can evolve for many years if stored properly. Serving is recommended starting from 5-7 years after the harvest, when aromatic complexity and tannic structure reach a good balance. The most favorable tasting window is between the seventh and fifteenth year, a stage in which more mature nuances emerge without losing vitality.
