Description
What kind of wine is it
Banfi’s Brunello di Montalcino is a red made from Sangiovese, intense, elegant and well balanced. Its character brings together supple, polished tannins and a bright acidity, lending it a vibrant, powerful structure. It stands out for excellent persistence and great aging potential. A Banfi classic from Montalcino.
Where does it come from
The grapes come from the estate’s hillside vineyards in Montalcino, with gentle to moderate slopes. The soils lie on various sediments: from the deep marine Pliocene clay-sand soils, with plentiful calcareous stones, to the bluish-grey clays, moderately deep, mineral and moisture-retaining. This diversity of soils contributes to the wine’s complexity and structure. Banfi has produced its Brunello since the inaugural 1978 vintage.
How it is made
Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature in combined steel and French oak Horizon tanks, a setup that enhances aromatic precision. This is followed by at least two years of maturation, 80% in French oak casks and 20% in French oak barriques. This dual passage in wood refines the tannins and supports the wine’s evolution in bottle.
Tasting notes
In the glass it is ruby red with slight garnet highlights. The nose shows a sweet, fruity bouquet, with hints of plum, ripe cherry and small red berries, perfectly balanced by notes of licorice and pipe tobacco. On the palate the supple, polished tannins integrate with a bright acidity, yielding a vibrant, powerful structure and a long, persistent finish.
Food pairings
It pairs particularly well with rich, flavorful dishes. Its structure and acidity make it a fine match for grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses. It also makes a fine wine for contemplation.
When to serve it
A red for occasions that call for an intense, elegant profile, to enjoy after a meal or during focused tasting sessions. It boasts great aging potential and is well suited to cellaring, where it continues to evolve over time.
