Description
What kind of wine is it
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva di Pian del Prete is a red wine made from Sangiovese grapes grown in Montalcino, Tuscany. It displays a structured character and an ability to evolve over time, with complexity that reveals itself in stages. Winemaking involves fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature and extended maceration on the skins, followed by 36 months in oak barrels and at least 6 months in bottle. The profile is balanced and elegant, suitable for long aging.
Where it comes from
This Brunello originates from the Pian del Prete estate, on the southern hills of Montalcino between 300 and 350 meters. Clay-limestone soils with galestro and alberese offer minerality and structure. The Mediterranean climate, with hot and ventilated summers and cool nights, allows optimal ripening and preserves freshness, resulting in a rich and balanced aromatic profile.
How it is produced
Hand harvesting and selection in the vineyard ensure only the best bunches. After destemming, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, with prolonged maceration to extract color and aromas. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in oak barrels, resulting in smoother tannins. Aging continues for 36 months in large French and Slavonian oak barrels, then at least 6 months in bottle complete the evolution.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it appears intense ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose reveals ripe cherry and plum, with hints of cocoa, coffee, tobacco, and leather. On the palate it offers full body, velvety and well-integrated tannins, balanced acidity, and a long finish with mineral accents and stewed fruit. The harmony between structure and freshness sustains an elegant and persistent drinking experience.
Food pairing
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva di Pian del Prete pairs with roast red meats, braised game, and aged cheeses such as Tuscan pecorino. It is also ideal with typical dishes such as pici with wild boar ragù or pappardelle with wild boar. The tannic texture and aromatic complexity enhance flavorful and structured dishes and highlight contrasting tastes.
When to serve it
Thanks to its longevity, the wine can be enjoyed young from 5 years after bottling and even after a longer period in the cellar. The optimal consumption window extends between 5 and 15 years, during which time the profile broadens, becomes more complex, and offers new nuances with each tasting.
