Description

What type of wine it is

Susumaniello by Masseria Ficarigna is a red wine that enhances one of the most representative native grape varieties. Classified as Salento, it precisely expresses the characteristics of this typical variety of the Salento peninsula. Careful vinification results in a balanced and smooth profile, designed to offer a technical, direct and satisfying drink. Thanks to exclusive aging in stainless steel, the wine retains its original fruity notes and aromatic nuances from the grapes.

Where it comes from

This wine comes to life in the Salento peninsula, an area with a strong agricultural vocation. Masseria Ficarigna pays homage to local traditions starting with its own name, which recalls the prickly pear plant, an undisputed symbol of the landscape. The label tells this local identity through an illustration depicting a donkey, the historic pack animal once used to transport baskets of prickly pears to markets. These elements underline its strong bond with rural culture.

How it is made

The Susumaniello grapes are harvested around the middle of September. In the winery, crushing is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation kept between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. This is followed by skin maceration lasting six to eight days, aiming to extract color and matter in a balanced way. The entire production cycle is completed by a measured period of rest in stainless steel tanks until bottling, thus preserving the freshness and integrity of the fruit.

Tasting notes

Intense ruby red in color. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet, marked by clear fruity scents of blackcurrant and plum, interwoven with refreshing hints of thyme, ink nuances and a finish with mineral flint-like traits. On the palate, the sip is enveloping, led by supple tannins and a pleasant freshness that balances the structure and ensures a harmonious, well-defined tasting progression.

Pairings

The harmonious structure of Susumaniello makes it ideal to accompany rich first courses and red meat dishes. Its encounter with traditional orecchiette with ragù enhances the succulence of the dish, balancing it with a lively gustatory drive. It also pairs excellently with aged cheese boards, where the pronounced freshness cleanses the palate from the persistence of the cheese. The fruity notes and fine herbaceous hints naturally support intensely flavored dressings.

Serving suggestions

This wine is the right choice for convivial moments that require a dynamic and versatile presence at the table. Suitable for dinners centered around land-based menus, it best expresses its qualities when enjoyed relatively soon after bottling, thanks to the technical stainless steel management that favors immediate drinkability. Paying attention to the serving temperature allows you to clearly outline the vibrancy of the fruit and the typical notes of the grape variety.
