April 2005 Great Australian Shiraz

The snow is just starting to melt, and it is still relatively cold outside. This April, I will feature several full bodied wines from Australia that could warm away your chills. We have eight deliciously tempting Shiraz of varying structure and depth. These wines are also moderately priced in lieu of the tax month. Australian Shiraz Reviews BULLETIN PLACE, 2003 SHIRAZ, SOUTH EASTERN AUSTRALIA, $8-$9 Screw cap. Ripe, distinct and supple. Fruity in style. Taste reminiscent of berry jam and toast. Moderate length finish. Drink through 2005. FOUR SISTERS, 2002 SHIRAZ, SOUTH EASTERN AUSTRALIA, $11-$12 Rich, supple and moderately complex. Tasting of loganberry, cooked meat, clove and vanilla. Full –bodied with long finish. Drink through 2004 LINDEMANS, 2002 SHIRAZ, RESERVE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA, $11-$12 A sure value. This Shiraz is fruit-forward with noteworthy structure. Features taste of raspberry, loganberry jam and toast. Supple with medium long finish Drink through 2006. NINE STONES * 2003 SHIRAZ, McLAREN VALE, $12-$13 * 2003 SHIRAZ, HILLTOPS, $12-$13 Screwed capped. Ripe and luscious is the McLaren Vale. It features very rich flavors of boysenberry jam, pepper and toasts. Hillstops is more delicate and fine. It is amazingly supple, harmonious and rich. Well-balanced with excellent texture and length. Tasting of blackberry, toast and cherry. Drink through 2006. PETER LEHMANN, 2002 SHIRAZ, BAROSSA, $16-$17 Tasty, fleshy. Exotic combination of loganberry and plum, with hints of toasts, cocoa and pepper. It is a moderately intense Syrah. Drink through 2007. ROSEMOUNT ESTATE, 2003 SHIRAZ, SOUTH EASTERN AUSTRALIA, $12-$13 Grapey and supple. This Shiraz features great balance, texture and flavors. Tasting of blueberry jam, pepper and oak. Drink through 2006. YALUMBA, 2001 SHIRAZ, BAROSSA, $17-$18 Full-bodied, rich and supple. Bursting with flavors of berry jam, aniseed and oak. Moderately rich and well-balanced. Features medium long finish. Drink through 2005.
