Description
What type of wine is it?
Villa da Filicaja's Barolo is a full-bodied red wine made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. It stands out for its harmonious and complex style, with fermentation and maceration lasting 14-16 days at a controlled temperature, followed by a long aging period of 38 months in oak barrels, of which at least 18 are in French oak. The result is a rich profile, with silky tannins and an elegant personality, suitable for long aging.
Where does it come from?
This Barolo originates in Piedmont, in the historic area that includes Castiglione Falletto, Cherasco, Diano d’Alba, Verduno, and Grinzane Cavour. The calcareous-marl soils and continental climate, with marked temperature variations, encourage the development of distinct aromas. The vineyards, situated between 250 and 350 meters above sea level, benefit from sunny exposure and cool breezes that enhance the wine’s complexity.
How is it produced?
The Nebbiolo grapes are hand-picked in October, selecting only the best bunches. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with skin maceration for 14-16 days at 28-30°C, to extract color and varietal aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 38 months in oak, with at least 18 months in French oak barrels and the rest in barrels of various sizes, then rests in the bottle to harmonize its profile.
Tasting notes
Visually, Villa da Filicaja's Barolo displays an intense garnet color with orange highlights. On the nose, it offers a floral bouquet of violet, small red fruits and hints of leather. On the palate, it is structured and harmonious, with polished tannins that provide roundness and depth. The finish is persistent, with lingering impressions of ripe red fruit, sweet spices and subtle notes of vanilla.
Food pairing
This Barolo pairs well with first courses featuring mushrooms, like tagliatelle with porcini and tajarin with Piedmontese ragù. It is also excellent with aged cheeses typical of Piedmont and with Alba white truffle. The wine’s structure also complements braised red meats and stewed game, enhancing the richness of dishes thanks to the freshness of the tannins.
When to serve it
Villa da Filicaja’s Barolo exhibits remarkable aging potential and can evolve for many years if properly stored. It’s recommended to serve it starting from 5-7 years after the harvest, when aromatic complexity and tannic structure are well balanced. The optimal drinking window is between the seventh and fifteenth year, when more mature nuances emerge without losing vitality.
