Description
What kind of wine it is
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione La Pieve di San Felice is a red wine from the Chianti Classico denomination, made from Sangiovese and other native grape varieties grown in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the province of Siena. Vinification starts in steel and continues with aging in French oak, which gives it a full-bodied, structured style with ripe tannins and well-balanced freshness.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the best vineyards of Tenuta San Felice in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the Siena sector of Chianti Classico. The soils are medium-textured, with a significant presence of rocky material and calcareous-marly clays: elements that influence the consistency, depth, and definition of the sip, enhancing the identity of Sangiovese alongside the native varieties.
How it is made
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in steel, followed by maceration on the skins for 22 days at 28–30°C, to promote the extraction of color and phenolic compounds. After fermentation, the wine matures for 24 months in French oak tonneaux and completes its aging with an additional 8 months in the bottle, steps that help to integrate the tannic texture and aromatic profile.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby red color. The nose is broad and persistent, with notes of violets and blackcurrant intertwining with hints of tobacco and licorice. On the palate, it is full-bodied, smooth, and well-structured, with ripe tannins and a balanced acidity that leads to a clean, lingering finish.
Food pairings
At the table, it pairs well with game dishes, roasts, and grilled meats, where its structure and tannins support rich and succulent preparations. It also finds a natural match with aged cheeses, thanks to its lingering taste and the spicy and balsamic notes that consistently emerge.
When to serve it
It is recommended when you want a red wine with character to accompany an important meal, maintaining a balance between softness and freshness. The robust structure and prolonged aging in tonneaux lead to a complex aromatic profile; it can be enjoyed immediately for its definition or after a period in the cellar. With proper aeration it showcases its olfactory breadth and persistent flavor.
