Description

What kind of wine is it?

Primitivo di Manduria Riserva Collezione del Conte by Villa da Filicaja is a structured red wine made from Primitivo grapes, an authentic expression of the Salento territory. Its identity is defined by an intense and fruity aromatic profile, supported by a pleasant softness on the palate. Thanks to its vinification process and targeted aging in oak barrels, it reveals an intriguing complexity that combines the grape’s primary aromas with warm spicy notes. This wine achieves a perfect balance between intensity and persistence and offers a full and rich tasting experience.

Where does it come from?

The grapes are sourced from the northern Salento area, a region historically tied to the cultivation of this variety. The vineyards thrive on calcareous soils, a key geological feature that imparts a solid foundation and clear definition of aromas to the wine. The local pedoclimatic conditions, with their excellent exposure, foster the perfect ripening of the grapes. In this context, Villa da Filicaja carefully selects the fruit to bring forth in the glass the very essence of the Primitivo di Manduria designation.

How is it made?

After the harvest, the process begins with controlled-temperature fermentation, accompanied by about ten days’ maceration on the skins to extract color and aromatic compounds. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, a step that further smooths the wine's structure. The maturation ends with a rest of ten to twelve months in French and American oak barriques. This phase in wood enhances the aromas and softens the tannic framework.

Tasting notes

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color with lively purple highlights. The bouquet opens with pronounced dark fruit aromas, clearly recalling marasca cherry and plum. Over time, elegant touches of tobacco and leather, the result of oak aging, join in. On the palate, it is enveloping and smooth, with an intense sip that fills the mouth. The finish stands out for its long persistence, faithfully echoing the notes perceived on the nose.

Food pairings

Its bold structure makes it an ideal companion for elaborate and flavorful first courses, typical of traditional cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, where its smoothness balances the succulence of barbecued dishes. It also shines alongside generous platters of cured meats and aged cheeses, thanks to its ability to cleanse the palate with a dry, lingering finish. The wine’s aromatic intensity harmonizes perfectly with bold-flavored recipes.

When to serve it

This red is intended to enhance dining occasions during main meals, especially at festive dinners centered around substantial dishes. With its equilibrium between immediate fruitiness and developed aromatics, it is enjoyable now but also boasts a structure suitable for medium aging. It's the perfect choice when looking to present a welcoming wine that elevates a sophisticated menu. Poured into the proper glass, it ensures a gratifying tasting experience that truly reflects its place of origin.
