Description
What kind of wine it is
Nekaj Damijan Podversic is a macerated white wine made from pure Friulano grapes, classified as Venezia Giulia. The long skin contact places it in the so-called orange wine style, with a complex and structured profile where the fruity notes and savory character are well-balanced. Fermentation occurs spontaneously and the wine is bottled unfiltered, offering a clear expression of the raw material.
Where it comes from
Nekaj originates in the Collio Goriziano, a border area between Italy and Slovenia where vineyards and traditions intertwine. Here, Damijan Podversic works as a winemaker with an approach rooted in the culture of macerated wines. The area has become a reference for this style also thanks to personalities like Josko Gravner, who has contributed to the revival of ancient practices, from skin-contact winemaking to the use of amphorae.
How it is produced
After harvesting, the Friulano grapes are crushed and the must remains in contact with the skins for about two to three months. Maceration takes place in oak truncated conical vats, with spontaneous fermentation and no addition of cultured yeasts. Once the skin contact phase ends, the wine is not filtered before bottling and ages for twelve months in the bottle before release, stabilizing its flavor and aroma profile.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it shows golden yellow with clear orange hues, consistent with the long maceration of white grapes. The nose is complex and opens with orange peel, quince, and medicinal herbs. The palate is multifaceted and vivid, with a precise balance between fruity sweetness and savoriness, and a persistence that derives from the prolonged skin contact.
Food pairing
At the table, it pairs well with flavorful dishes, where intensity and seasoning meet the structure of the macerated wine. It complements simple preparations such as eggs in tomato sauce and seafood risotto, where the wine’s savory component integrates with the dish and follows its aromatic evolution.
When to serve it
It is a suitable choice when looking for a technically styled macerated white, capable of offering complexity and structure while maintaining recognizable balance. It is ideal for lunches and dinners where the food has character, allowing the wine’s aromatic and savory sides to shine through. The wine spends twelve months aging in the bottle before release, and its borderland identity and skin-contact winemaking make it perfect for moments when a non-conventional yet measured profile is desired.
