Description
What kind of wine is it
Vougeot Clos du Prieuré Monopole from Domaine de la Vougeraie is a Burgundy red made from pure Pinot Noir, grown in the commune of Vougeot in the Côte de Nuits. The wine shows a precise structure and a clean aromatic profile, with fine tannins that balance intensity and control. Vinification includes cold pre-fermentation maceration and aging in wooden barrels, which adds complexity without overshadowing the varietal character and enhances the connection to the terroir.
Where does it come from
The grapes come from the climat Clos du Prieuré, a monopole plot of about one hectare in the heart of Côte de Nuits. The vines, planted between 1901 and 1983, grow on calcareous soils rich in pebbles, ensuring drainage and heat retention. The continental climate encourages slow ripening and preserves freshness and aromatic precision, contributing to a taut, defined Pinot Noir with excellent aging potential.
How is it produced
Grapes are harvested with care to maintain the integrity of the bunches, which are then vinified without crushing. This is followed by a cold pre-fermentation maceration to gradually extract color and aromas. Fermentation lasts about 18 days with delicate extractions. Aging continues for 15 months in wooden barrels, partly new, to integrate spicy notes and fine tannins and maintain Pinot Noir's distinctive character.
Tasting notes
The wine is ruby red with luminous highlights. On the nose, you'll find mature red fruit aromas like cherry and raspberry, followed by earthy notes and spicy nuances tied to barrel aging. On the palate it is elegant and full, with lively acidity and fine tannins supporting each sip. Persistence is long, with returning fruity and spicy notes and a clean, dry finish.
Pairings
This Pinot Noir pairs with flavorful dishes such as roasted or grilled red meats, game, and aged cheeses. In French cuisine, it naturally accompanies boeuf bourguignon, and is an excellent match with duck breast in red wine reduction or braised beef. Among cheeses, it pairs ideally with well-aged comté or matured pecorino, supporting the wine's structure.
When to serve
Vougeot Clos du Prieuré Monopole is perfect for significant occasions when you seek an elegant, deep red for a complete dinner. Recommended serving temperature is 16°C, with early opening or brief decanting to enhance aromatic complexity. The wine can evolve in the bottle; its profile broadens towards spicier and earthier notes and its balance remains firm both in youth and after a few years of aging.
