Description
What kind of wine is it?
Bergsig's Breedekloof Gewürztraminer is a white wine made from Gewürztraminer grapes grown in the Breede River Valley, South Africa. Vinification involves a brief cold maceration and fermentation in stainless steel at low temperatures, interrupting fermentation to maintain residual sugar levels. The result offers an intense aromatic profile, well-balanced freshness , and a slightly sweet finish , making it suitable both as an aperitif and for food pairings.
Where does it come from?
The grapes come from hillside vineyards in the Breede River Valley, in the Breedekloof subzone, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with significant temperature variations. The vineyards, located between 240 and 350 meters above sea level, experience harsh winters and well-drained soils, conditions that favor slow ripening and a balance between sweetness and acidity . The breezy exposure and local elevations create an ideal environment for aromatic varieties such as Gewürztraminer.
How it is produced
The grapes, hand-picked and selected from a single vineyard, are destemmed and chilled to 8°C for prolonged skin contact . The free-run must ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks between 12 and 14°C to preserve the primary aromas . Fermentation is interrupted to maintain a certain level of residual sugars, thus defining a rich aromatic style along with a light structure and a soft finish.
Tasting notes
The color is straw yellow with golden highlights. The aroma is intense and clean , with notes of rose petals, lychee, and sweet spices reminiscent of Turkish delight. On the palate, it is fresh and fruity , with moderate sweetness and well-integrated acidity. The finish remains aromatic and sweet , with a lingering finish that recalls exotic fruit and spices without being heavy.
What does it pair with?
It pairs perfectly with spicy Asian dishes , where its smoothness mitigates the heat and its aromatics complement ginger, curry, and coriander. It's also excellent with blue cheeses , thanks to the residual sugar that balances the flavor. Locally, it pairs well with South African dishes like Cape Malay curry or bobotie, and also pairs well with sushi, delicate ramen, and vegetables sautéed in sweet and sour sauce.
When to serve it
This white wine expresses itself best when young , when the varietal aromas are more lively and the freshness appears marked. We recommend serving it at 8-10°C in medium-sized glasses to enhance the floral and exotic notes. Perfect for informal moments or as an aperitif , it maintains its fragrance and balance if stored in the dark and at a stable temperature, without the need for long aging.
