It was in the hills of Chianti Classico, in the famous Florentine bastion of Fonterutoli, that the peace treaties were signed that defined the historic assignment of Chianti to the territory of the Florentine Republic and that led in 1398 to the establishment of the Black Rooster, which became the emblem of the area. There stands the fortified Castle of Fonterutoli, which has seen pass through its corridors Tuscan princes and especially the Mazzei family, Florentine nobles who had the castle built in honour of their father.
The history of the Mazzei Marquises continues to this day, after 25 generations, with the production of a great variety of wines, mostly red, and now famous far beyond the borders of Italy. These include the Chianti Classico DOCG Fonterutoli 2020 (93pt James Suckling), from grapes selected from 120 different plots on the hills overlooking the Val d'Elsa - 90% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Colorino. With its elegant body and soft, intense flavour, it has aromas of wild berries enriched with pleasant spicy notes, making it perfect with game and fried vegetables.

The Chianti Classico Fonterutoli of Mazzei was born in the Castello di Fonterutoli estate, located in the province of Siena, on the hills overlooking the Val d'Elsa, in the heart of the Chianti Classico.
It is produced 90% with Sangiovese grapes and 10% with Malvasia Nera, Colorino and Merlot, selected from the 120 different farm parcels.
