Château Rieussec
Château Rieussec is one of the great sweet wines of Bordeaux, a Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes and Barsac in the 1855 classification. The estate lies at the heart of the Sauternes vineyard, in Fargues, between Yquem and Fargues, on a rise overlooking the confluence of the Ciron and the Garonne, the ideal microclimate for the development of noble rot.
In the eighteenth century the estate belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon, to whom the second wine, Carmes de Rieussec, pays tribute. Since 1984 Château Rieussec has been part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite).
The vineyard extends over 85 hectares on gravelly clay-sandy soils with limestone outcrops, planted predominantly to Sémillon, with Sauvignon Blanc and a small share of Muscadelle. The wine ages for 16 to 22 months in barriques, 70–90% of which are new, mostly sourced from the group’s cooperage, for an average production of around 50,000 bottles.
A member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, Château Rieussec is an opulent and elegant Sauternes, among the most acclaimed of the appellation.
