Jacopo Biondi Santi
Jacopo Biondi Santi is one of the leading figures in the world of Italian wine. Its history is intimately linked with the famous Tenuta del Greppo di Montalcino, one of the most prized parcels of all, capable of giving extraordinary wines. Biondi Santi wines were already famous in the nineteenth century, awarded at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1867 and recognized as excellence in the land of Tuscany. After the dark period of phylloxera, the Greppo vines were replanted using the scions of the best plants and introducing the practice of mass selection of Sangiovese to progressively improve its quality. Thus the foundations of a great wine were born, which from the beginning of the twentieth century began to be appreciated as one of the best reds produced in Italy. During the 1970s, Franco Biondi Santi will then resume and complete the cloning selection begun in the mid-nineteenth century. Thanks to the collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Florence, the best plants were chosen in the period of 5 harvests, until the famous clone BBS / 11 (Brunello Biondi Santi, vine n ° 11) was identified, replanted on the new cuttings. Tenuta del Greppo, present in the oldest cadastral maps of Montalcino, is located at an altitude between 385 and 507 meters. The soils are poor, with abundant presence of marl and magnificently exposed. The microclimate is rather dry, with considerable temperature variations, which favor the development of intense and elegant perfumes and aromas. In 2013, on the death of his father Franco Biondi Santi, Jacopo took over the reins of the winery, continuing the centuries-old history of one of the most famous wine families. After his personal experience in the land of Maremma, which began in the late 1990s with the acquisition of the magnificent Tenuta Montepò, Jacopo Biondi Santi continued his adventure in Montalcino in the name of tradition. If the Maremma, with its virgin lands, represents the place of experimentation and innovation, Tenuta il Greppo is the place of history and ancient customs. Montalcino is the memory of the Biondi Santi family, the place of memories, of a path of generations, which, without interruptions and uncertainties, has crossed the centuries in the name of continuity. With the entry of Jacopo the philosophy of the company has not changed and the wines have remained faithful to an identity consolidated over time. Of course the wines are not immutable and slowly change following the oenological developments and in part the taste of consumers. If the reserve always remains the traditional family wine, the vintage Brunello di Montalcino and above all the Rosso di Montalcino, compared to the past are more pleasant wines to drink in youth, without having to wait decades to appreciate their full expressive maturity.
