Laphroaig's story is a real journey through time. The origin and development of the distillery were profoundly influenced by the events that shook Scotland starting in 1745. Around 1815, the brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston rented 1000 acres on the Isle of Islay, to devote themselves to cattle breeding. That land is now Laphroaig, but what were the events that led to the birth of the distillery? The Johnston brothers quickly realized that barley had to be grown to feed the cattle, what made the difference was the idea of using excess barley to distil Whiskey . The intuition was decisive, Laphroaig's Whiskey soon began to be appreciated on the island and being even more profitable to distill Whiskey than to raise cattle, the two brothers decided to devote themselves completely to the production of Whiskey. Thus was born the Whiskey Laphroaig. Over the years the distillery became more and more important and famous, new buildings were created for the distillation and starting from 1923 the Laphroaig Whiskey began to circulate also in Scandinavian countries, Latin America, Europe and Canada . Cunningly, the successors of the Johnston brothers, who led Laphroaig in the years of prohibition, devised a foolproof method to continue exporting to America. They claimed that their whiskey was endowed with medicinal properties, as evidenced by the pungent scents of seaweed and sea salt that distinguished their distillate. The recipe for Laphroaig whiskey has been kept secret over the decades and this aura of mystery that hovered around the fine distillate was one of the determining factors for Laphroaig's success. A second brilliant intuition determined a further qualitative leap in the production of the Laphroaig Whiskey. They also began to age the distillate in American oak barrels previously used for Bourbon . In 1950, Whiskey Laphroaig was aged in both European ex-sherry casks and American ex-bourbon oak casks. Laphroaig's reputation has always grown over the decades. In 1994, Prince Charles of England visited Laphroaig and awarded it with the Royal Warrant, the royal coat of arms that we still find on every bottle of the precious Laphroaig distillate today. Laphroaig Whiskey

The main ingredient for the production of Laphroaig Whiskey is water, which is essential for refrigeration during the production process and for bringing the unique flavor of the Isle of Islay to the whiskey. The water used for Laphroaig comes from Kilbride Reservoir, a key source of water that has been disputed over the decades by the island's many distillers. The main feature of Islay single malt whiskeys is the typical peat of the island, very different from that of mainland Scotland, due to the high contribution of Sphagnum, the musk that contributes to the medicinal taste of Islay whiskey. The peat bog used for the production of the Laphroaig Whiskey is those of Glenmachrie, which thanks to its mix of heather, lichen and musk guarantees the whiskey a smoky and iodine-like olfactory profile. The other main feature of Laphroaig Whiskey is the traditional floor malting. Barley is left to germinate naturally. Furthermore, it is important to know that Laphroaig whiskeys are obtained with a double distillation, through seven copper stills. The barrels where the distillate is refined are arranged in warehouses located along the coast, consequently the distillate is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and is enriched with the unique flavors released by the wood during aging. In addition to ex-bourbon barrels, ex-sherry barrels are also used. The former, of American white oak, give the Laphroaig Whiskey a sweetness similar to caramel, vanilla and red fruit notes, spicy and leathery hints. The ex-sherry barrels, made instead of European oak, make the whiskey a little drier and spicier, with notes of orange, dried black fruit, cinnamon and cloves.
