Chardonnay Day

Today is Chardonnay Day, a day dedicated to the world's most famous and widespread white grape variety. Capable of producing a wine of extraordinary qualities, Chardonnay remains, especially in evolution, a versatile and promising emblem for composing pure wines and intriguing blends of extreme charm. Its close kinship with France, to which the Burgundy wine tradition has always delivered admirable masterpieces, has not prevented this variety from also being bred in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile. Italy, too, has long welcomed it as a valid expression of a generous and adaptable wine that can express itself in different ways without losing charm and elegance.

Different climates and latitudes make Chardonnay safe and ample, qualified to produce fresh, subtle and essential wines as in the Chablis region, but also rich and almost opulent wines as in the case of California and Sicily. In addition, the ageing in wood, so decisive for the success of Burgundy, configures a true production style and almost a vocation to achieve maximum organoleptic expression in refined wines with great personality such as the examples produced in the Mâconnais and the Côte de Beaune: these are the wines in which tropical fruits and the woody notes of nuts such as almond and hazelnut meet the toastiness of the barrels for a more integrated and complex flavour.

No less prestigious, the Champagne region is composed of almost 30% Chardonnay, where it is blended with Pinot Noir, or vinified alone (blanc de blancs).

From the fresh, floral bouquet to notes of ripe fruit, in short, Chardonnay is so versatile that it really does please everyone. Celebrate it with us, with this selection of the best Chardonnays, selected for you by the Vino.com sommeliers!
