Chenin Blanc

Born in the Loire Valley in France, Chenin Blanc is one of the most versatile grape varieties in the world, capable of transforming into dry, sweet, still, or sparkling wines. In its homeland, it shows a taut, vibrant, and deeply mineral profile, with notes of green apple, chalk, and honey, giving rise to legendary appellations like Vouvray and Savennières. Overseas, this grape has found a second ideal home in South Africa, where it has become the most widely planted white grape variety; here, thanks to the warmer climate, it delivers riper and fleshier versions, rich in tropical fruit, peach, and toasted nuances when aged in wood.

Thanks to its pronounced natural acidity, Chenin Blanc is a real ace up the sleeve at the table. The fresher, more incisive French versions create a perfect and elegant pairing with Loire goat cheeses, seafood, and delicate white fish. The structured expressions from the New World, or the slightly off-dry blends (those with a touch of residual sweetness), hold up beautifully to rich dishes like roast pork with apples, chicken in cream sauce, and moderately spicy Asian cuisine, such as Thai curries or sweet and sour dishes, where the wine’s acidity cleanses the palate and its softness mellows the spice.
