The Côte des Bar is the southernmost area of Champagne and lies in the Aube department, southeast of Troyes. The vineyard area extends between Bar-sur-Aube and Bar-sur-Seine, in a landscape of hills, woods, and numerous small valleys. Here Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety and the most distinctive element of the local Champagnes. Compared to the districts of the Marne, the Côte des Bar has different geology, with clay-limestone soils and outcrops of Kimmeridgian, in some respects closer to those of nearby Burgundy. The result is an area with a strong identity, where Pinot Noir can produce structured, fruity, and deep wines.

Where the Côte des Bar is located

The Côte des Bar is located in the southern part of the Champagne production area, southeast of Troyes. The vineyard forms a kind of arc between Bar-sur-Seine to the west and Bar-sur-Aube to the east, and is crossed by numerous waterways that have carved the land into valleys and slopes. The vines are often planted on relatively steep coteaux, alternating with woods and farmland. Unlike the northern zones of Champagne, where chalk is particularly important, clay-limestone soils prevail in the Côte des Bar, with marls and limestones of Jurassic origin. In some areas there is the Kimmeridgian, a geological formation that contributes to the distinctive identity of the local soils.

The two areas of the Côte des Bar

The Côte des Bar is traditionally divided into two large sectors: the Barsuraubois, around Bar-sur-Aube, and the Barséquanais, around Bar-sur-Seine. In the Barsuraubois, vineyards occupy the hills and valleys cut by the Aube and its tributaries, while in the Barséquanais the vines develop mainly around the Seine valley. The differences between the two areas depend on the position of the vineyards, their exposure, and the nature of the soils. In both cases, the landscape is characterized by a strong alternation between vineyards, woods, and green valleys, which makes the Côte des Bar one of the most recognizable zones of southern Champagne.

The main villages of the Côte des Bar

Among the best-known winegrowing communes of the Côte des Bar are Bar-sur-Aube, Bar-sur-Seine, Essoyes, Les Riceys, Urville, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises and Mussy-sur-Seine. Les Riceys occupies a special place in the area’s wine geography: the commune is associated not only with Champagne, but also with Coteaux Champenois and the celebrated Rosé des Riceys, a still wine made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Essoyes is also known for its connection with the painter Auguste Renoir, who lived and worked in the area. The Côte des Bar does not include communes classified as Grand Cru or Premier Cru: the identity of the wines is therefore closely linked to the individual terroirs and to the work of the producers.

The grape varieties of the Côte des Bar

Pinot Noir is by far the dominant grape variety of the Côte des Bar and accounts for the great majority of the vineyard area. Its spread is linked to its ability to adapt to calcareous soils and to the climate of southern Champagne. In Champagnes it brings structure, body, and intensity, along with a particularly evident fruit component. Chardonnay covers a smaller area, but contributes freshness and finesse to blends. Pinot Meunier is also present, albeit in smaller quantities. The strong predominance of Pinot Noir makes Blanc de Noirs particularly representative of the area, capable of directly highlighting the character of the variety.

The style of the Champagnes of the Côte des Bar

The Champagnes of the Côte des Bar are often characterized by fruit, structure, and good palate breadth. Pinot Noir can express notes of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, and small red berries, accompanied by a fuller texture than Chardonnay-driven expressions. The calcareous component of the soils and Champagne’s typical acidity help maintain balance and freshness. With aging, notes of dried fruit, spices, honey, and pastry can emerge. Blanc de Noirs are particularly food-friendly and can accompany cured meats, terrines, poultry, white meats, and mushroom-based dishes. In fresher versions, Pinot Noir from the Côte des Bar also pairs well with fish and more intensely flavored gastronomic preparations.
