Description
What kind of wine is it
Sabaudo’s Nizza is a Piedmontese red wine made exclusively from Barbera grapes. It’s a red with character that combines the variety’s hallmark freshness with round tannins and well-balanced sweet notes of wood. Nizza is considered the highest expression of Barbera in Piedmont and comes from a very small production zone.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the area of Nizza Monferrato, in Piedmont, from which the wine takes its name. The production area is limited to just 18 municipalities. Once, Nizza was a subzone of Barbera d’Asti Superiore, and only in 2014 was it recognized as its own denomination, with a rigorous set of regulations. Sabaudo offers an interpretation true to Barbera’s character.
How it is made
The Barbera grapes are vinified to yield a well-structured red. The wine ages for 18 months in total, of which six in wooden casks. Time in wood adds sweet notes without masking the fruit, while the remaining maturation makes it more harmonious and complete before release.
Tasting notes
In appearance it is a deep ruby red that develops garnet highlights with aging. On the nose, aromas of red fruits such as sour cherries, plums and blueberries stand out, enriched by sweeter notes of vanilla and cinnamon from the wood. On the palate, Barbera’s freshness balances every nuance, with round tannins and a medium-long finish.
Food pairings
It pairs very well with Piedmontese dishes, from bagna cauda to ravioli al plin and fritto misto piemontese. Thanks to its freshness and structure, it also accompanies red meats, braised meats and aged cheeses.
When to serve it
It’s a red for convivial lunches and dinners, ideal for a table laden with Piedmontese dishes. Serve it in a large-bowled glass and let it breathe for a few minutes to bring out the fruit and spicy notes. Its aging makes it ready to enjoy now, yet also suitable for cellaring for a few years.
