Description
What type of wine it is
Ben Rye by Donnafugata is a sweet wine from Zibibbo grapes, produced on the island of Pantelleria in Sicily. It comes from temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless-steel, to which hand-destemmed dried grapes are added directly to the fermenting must to increase concentration. The style of this Passito di Pantelleria is intense and enveloping, marked by balanced sweetness and long persistence. Maturation continues in tank and subsequently in bottle, a process that helps build a complex, well-defined structure, ideal both to close a meal and for contemplation.
Where it comes from
This sweet wine comes from vineyards located in the heart of Pantelleria, a Sicilian island historically devoted to viticulture. The Mediterranean climate and the peculiarities of the small island lead to a style that focuses on clear aromatics and excellent balance on the palate. The identity of the place is clearly reflected in references to the local vegetation and in the aromatic signature typical of Zibibbo. Owing to its geographical position and deep-rooted farming practices, the island is among the most representative areas for the production of this dessert wine.
How it is made
The grapes destined for this passito are harvested and selected by hand with great care. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperature, during which dried, hand-destemmed grapes are added to the must. During maceration, the dried grapes gradually release sweetness, freshness and aromatic compounds, thus shaping the wine’s profile. Aging requires eight months in stainless steel and concludes with a rest of at least twelve months in bottle, a path designed to harmonize aromas and length.
Tasting notes
To the eye it presents a bright amber color, fully in tune with the type of wine and its maturation. On the nose, the bouquet is ample and introduces evident notes of apricot and candied orange, followed by precise hints of Mediterranean maquis. On the palate, the fruity sensations and aromatic herbs return with consistency, integrated by pleasant shades of honey. The balance between freshness and sweetness carries the sip to a long, satisfying finish with great continuity.
Food pairings
It is a recommended choice to accompany aged cheeses and blue cheeses, where the residual sugar perfectly balances the saltiness and intensity of the food. It easily pairs with desserts based on dried fruit and preparations with chocolate, thus enhancing the honeyed and citrusy notes. From a local perspective, it naturally accompanies Sicilian pastries at the end of the meal, maintaining a coherent aromatic profile. A classic regional pairing is with Sicilian cannoli, particularly the versions enriched with candied fruit.
When to serve it
This passito is perfectly suited to after-dinner occasions and proves to be an excellent wine for contemplation thanks to its remarkable intensity and lingering aromas. It is particularly appreciated at the end of an important meal, while it accompanies rich desserts or flavorful cheeses, where the acidity helps balance the taste sensations. It offers longevity beyond twenty years and is suitable for immediate enjoyment as well as for cellaring. Serving it with care and patience allows you to fully grasp the progression of the aromatic herbs and fruity notes.
