Luca Gardini
Excellent gustatory tension for this happy vintage of Primitivo Riserva. Fascinating nose, with notes of cherries in alcohol, touches of black pepper and nutmeg, then hints of undergrowth at the end. On the palate savory-brackish tannins, with a return of the balsamic component and sweet spices.

Description

What kind of wine it is

Primitivo di Manduria Riserva by Masseria Ficarigna is a red wine made exclusively from Primitivo grapes, cultivated in Salento. Its vinification begins with temperature-controlled fermentation inside stainless steel tanks, followed by twelve months of aging in oak barriques. This process shapes a dry, warm, and smooth profile, characterized by a mature aromatic texture and a finish with distinctive toasted notes. Its structured style proves ideal for accompanying dishes with bold flavors.

Where it comes from

This red comes to life in Puglia, within the Manduria area, a central territory for the Primitivo di Manduria denomination. Masseria Ficarigna aims to enhance the unique qualities of Salento and is inspired by the prickly pear, a typical fruit of the local landscape. The bottle’s identity recalls an ancient Aztec legend and depicts an eagle and a snake on a rock, a narrative tribute that combines careful aesthetics and highlights the wine’s authentic character.

How it’s made

The Primitivo grape clusters are handpicked, then gently pressed. The resulting must ferments at a controlled temperature in stainless steel, a choice designed to best preserve aromatic purity during yeast activity. Afterwards, the wine is aged for twelve months in oak barriques, a crucial stage for conferring structure, smoothness, and the wine’s signature spicy notes.

Tasting notes

In the glass, it reveals a ruby red color with intense garnet reflections. The nose opens with aromas of ripe red fruit and plum jam, woven with sensations of vanilla and clear balsamic hints. On the palate, it’s dry, warm, and smooth, driven by a broad progression flowing into a toasted finish with good persistence, in perfect harmony with the emerging aromatic notes.

Food pairings

This red pairs beautifully with braised meats, supporting their texture thanks to its smooth sip. It also goes well with grilled red meats, which highlight its mature and toasted components, and with game, responding to the demand for aromatic intensity. A slow-cooked braised beef is a traditional, perfectly balanced choice, where concentrated sauces interact with the wine’s spicy notes and depth of flavor.

When to serve it

Ideal for occasions calling for an intense glass, this wine supports structured courses throughout the meal. The balance between stainless steel vinification and barrique aging offers great satisfaction when seeking a warm progression, closed by pleasant toasted nuances. It finds its place in convivial settings focused on land-based cuisine. Using a large glass enhances contact with air and fully amplifies the balsamic and ripe fruit aromas.
