Description
What kind of wine is it
I Sodi di San Niccolò is the flagship wine of Castellare di Castellina, one of the first Supertuscans made exclusively with native grape varieties. It is a red of great structure and longevity, whose first vintage dates back to 1977. The label features the little bird, a symbol for over forty years of the winery’s commitment to sustainable viticulture.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Vigna San Niccolò, in Castellina in Chianti, in the province of Siena. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 350–400 meters, on calcareous soils. The name derives from the word Tuscan farmers used for plots that had to be worked by hand, because they were too hard (sodi) or too steep for the use of oxen. San Niccolò is instead the 14th‑century church that stands on Castellare’s property.
How it is made
The wine is made from Sangioveto and Malvasia Nera, trained to arched Guyot and harvested in mid‑October. Vinification takes place in stainless steel and is completed with malolactic fermentation. The wine ages for twenty‑four to thirty months in barriques, partly new, and for another twelve months in bottle.
Tasting notes
The color is a deep ruby red. The nose shows great concentration, with ripe red fruit recalling jam, together with spices, vanilla and licorice. On the palate it has a dense and elegant texture, supported by Sangiovese’s acidity, with sweet tannins. The finish is long and highly persistent.
Food pairings
It pairs well with cured meats and savory meats, with rich, succulent dishes and cheeses that are flavorful and aged. It works very well with Pecorino toscano and with Parmigiano.
When to serve it
It is a red for special occasions, when you want a structured wine to bring to the table with rich dishes. Best enjoyed in a large glass, opening the bottle a little in advance to let the aromas express themselves. Thanks to its longevity, it is also suitable for cellaring.
