Description
The Laphroaig 10 Years Old is an Islay single malt Scotch with a deep gold color. The distillery, on the island’s southern coast, was officially founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. The 10 Year Old is the classic of the range and one of the whiskies that best embodies the Islay style: it has received numerous accolades, including the Royal Warrant of the Prince of Wales.
Laphroaig draws on its own raw materials: peat fields, grains, and a maltings that covers at least part of the required malted barley. The 10 Year Old is still distilled according to the original formula devised by Ian Hunter. The distillery has expanded several times over the years and today produces around 2.6 million liters of whisky per year.
On the nose, peat smoke leads with medicinal phenols, a veil of sweetness suggesting esters, and nuances of leather, earth, chocolate, and oak; with attention, pear and sweet malt also emerge. The palate is oily, medium-weight, and saline, with intense peat that amplifies with a drop of water. The finish is long, rounded, and very dry, with hints of seaweed and one of the most distinctive medicinal signatures in the whisky world.
This is a whisky for lovers of smoky, peaty spirits. Enjoy it neat or with a splash of water, which opens up the flavor profile and highlights its fruity nuances. It’s the choice for those who want to taste the most typical expression of Islay and a characterful after-dinner digestif.
