Description
What kind of wine is it
The Trattmann Pinot Noir Riserva from Cantina Girlan is a red wine made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. It shows a ruby color with subtle garnet hues. Its style is delicate and vinous, with a well-defined structure and a long finish.
Where it comes from
The grapes from Cantina Girlan come from the oldest and most suitable vineyards of Alto Adige, on the hills of Bassa Atesina and Oltradige. Most grow on the eastern slope of Bassa Atesina, at an altitude of 380-430 meters, on deep soils of clay and limestone. The rest comes from Oltradige, at about 500 meters, where the soils are morainic deposits on porphyry rock of volcanic origin. The microclimate and the age of the vines, which have yielded good results for decades, are the factors that make these vineyards suitable for Pinot Noir.
How it is made
The harvest is manual, with transport to the winery in small crates. A portion of the grapes is vinified as whole clusters. The grapes are gravity-fed into stainless steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation, which lasts between 20 and 24 days. Once malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine ages for 12 months in barriques and small wooden casks. This is followed by 8 months in large wooden casks and a further 8 months of bottle aging.
Tasting notes
The color is ruby red with garnet reflections. The aromas are intense and complex, with ripe fruit, cherry and Morello cherry. On the palate it is delicate and vinous, with excellent structure and good length.
Food pairings
It pairs particularly well with roasts and game. It also goes nicely with piquant cheeses.
When to serve it
It is a table red for meat-based dinners and richer meals. Serve it in a large glass, which allows the fruit aromas to emerge. It has a good aging potential of around 12 years, so it can be cellared and opened on a special occasion.
