Description

Masseto is excellence embodied in wine. A legendary wine from a terroir with unique vocational characteristics, unanimously considered one of the most prestigious wines in the world.

Obtained from masterful interpretation of pure Merlot grapes, sourced from three sub-zones of the vineyard named Masseto, namely Masseto Centrale, Masseto Junior, and Masseto Alto, favored by the presence of a mild-temperate climate and the breezes blowing near the maritime expanse.

Vintage 2005

The 2005 vintage was characterized by a mild winter interrupted only by short periods of intense cold which slightly delayed the budding. Spring then became quickly warm and sunny, bringing forward flowering around May 20. The summer months experienced normal temperatures and scarce rainfall, ideal conditions for a homogeneous ripening. In August, some rainfall around mid-August helped the grape development. The harvest was postponed to allow full maturation: it began on September 14 in the lower parts of the vineyard and concluded on September 30 with the central part.

Masseto 2005 is a pure Merlot that expresses deep aromatic maturity, a product of a late but balanced year. Each portion of the vineyard was handpicked and vinified separately. After double sorting and soft crushing, fermentation took place in stainless steel and truncated cone-shaped oak barrels at a controlled temperature, followed by a maceration period of 15-18 days. The malolactic fermentation occurred in new French oak barriques, where the wine then aged for 24 months, with assembly mid-course. After bottling, it followed a further 12 months of aging in the bottle.

The Masseto 2005 presents a rich olfactory intensity: notes of ripe fruit and spices blend with balsamic and menthol tones. On the palate, it is wide, enveloping, and structured. The initially vigorous tannins have refined over time, offering a lively sip balanced by a freshness that supports the overall richness of the wine. Already enjoyable, it nonetheless has excellent potential for further evolution in the bottle.
