Description

What kind of wine it is

Coastal Region Chenin Blanc WO 21 Gables by Spier is a still white from South Africa, made from Chenin Blanc grapes grown in the Coastal Region. The style shows fullness, lively acidity, and pronounced sapidity, with a structure able to support an intense and orderly aromatic profile. The winemaking process includes a brief maceration on the skins and fermentation in wooden barrels, followed by prolonged ageing that creates a balance between fruit and spices. This Chenin Blanc is suitable for immediate consumption and for ageing in the bottle, maintaining harmony between freshness and the oak influence.

Origin

The wine originates in the Coastal Region of South Africa with selected grapes from the Stellenbosch area, one of the country's best-known zones. Proximity to the ocean, with breezes and temperature swings, preserves the freshness and enhances sapidity. Plots with vines about 40 years old deliver lower yields and greater intensity, and the Chenin Blanc expresses tension, ripe fruit, and an aptitude for ageing.

Production Method

The manual harvest comes from three distinct plots to preserve the integrity of the bunches and enhance the components of the fruit. In the winery, the grapes are destemmed, undergo brief maceration and pressing, resulting in a must rich in aromas. Fermentation takes place in wooden barrels, and the wine is then aged for about 14 months in barrels, with a proportion being new. This process stabilises the structure, increases gustatory complexity, and integrates notes of sweet spices and dried fruit.

Tasting Notes

In the glass it appears a brilliant straw yellow with good consistency. The nose reveals dried apricot and peach, followed by citrus and almond; the finish offers a spiciness reminiscent of vanilla from the use of wood. The palate is full on entry, progressing to highlight sapidity and aromatic intensity, supported by well-perceived freshness. The finish is persistent, with fruity returns and a discreet toasted note, more structured than a white vinified solely in steel.

Food Pairings

This Chenin Blanc pairs with white meats and creamy dishes such as almond chicken, where the structure and dried fruit notes find continuity. It matches risottos, especially with mushrooms or asparagus, thanks to the combination of consistency and freshness. Overall, it can accompany vegetable-based dishes or delicately flavoured preparations, but these are generic suggestions and not proven pairings by the producer.

Serving Suggestions

It is a white wine suited to both structured aperitifs and the table, when volume and aromatic precision are desired. It can be served chilled to highlight sapidity and freshness; in large glasses, brief aeration may be beneficial. Ageing for a few years can also enhance its evolved notes, but these are general recommendations based on the wine's style.
