Description
What kind of wine it is
Volnay by Joseph Drouhin is an elegant red wine from Burgundy, made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes. This label expresses a refined and well-defined profile, characterized by a balanced structure and clear freshness on the palate. Thanks to fermentation with indigenous yeasts and subsequent maturation in wood, the wine combines great aromatic precision with remarkable aging potential.
Where it comes from
This wine originates from the Volnay area, located south of Beaune and just after the commune of Pommard, in the heart of Burgundy. The vineyards sink their roots into soils composed of limestone marl in varying shades and small pebbles, which are fundamental in defining the character of the territory. This specific geological composition lends the grapes pronounced elegance and helps create a balanced flavor profile.
How it is made
Production begins with manual harvesting and meticulous cluster selection, followed by total destemming. The must ferments for about two or three weeks in small open vats, then undergoes pressing through a traditional vertical press. Finally, the wine ages for twelve to sixteen months in French oak barrels, a crucial step that favors the integration of fine tannins and consolidates aromatic stability.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it shows a lively and bright color, a prelude to aromas in the first few years reminiscent of violet and blackcurrant, which then evolve toward ripe fruit and sweet spices. On the palate, it reveals a rounded and velvety texture, supported by vibrant acidity that perfectly balances the structure. The tasting concludes with a long finish, enriched by pleasant hints of candied fruit and delicate notes of vanilla.
Food pairings
Its marked freshness and soft tannins make this red an ideal match for white meat dishes. It finds harmony alongside classic roast poultry, where the wine’s acidity perfectly balances the juiciness of the meat. A very apt and traditional pairing is with coq au vin, which enhances the roundness of the sip without ever overpowering the delicate character of Pinot Noir.
When to serve it
This red is an excellent choice for convivial occasions when you wish to bring an elegant and well-structured bottle to the table. It is enjoyable from its early years, allowing you to appreciate its fresh floral notes, but also lends itself well to careful aging. Left to rest over time, it will reward your patience by developing interesting tertiary aromas and greater gustatory complexity.
