Description

What type of wine it is

Volnay Cuvée Amphore by La Pousse d’Or is a red wine produced in Burgundy, specifically in the renowned Côte de Beaune area. This expression of Pinot Noir grapes comes to life on soils composed of marl-limestone and clay-pebble, key elements that help define its flavour profile. The technical choice of amphora aging allows the pure fruit expression to remain intact and offers a faithful interpretation of the terroir. The result is a wine that perfectly balances structural density with distinctive mineral freshness.

Origin

The wine comes from the Volnay appellation, within the renowned 1er Cru En Caillerets area, nestled in the landscape of Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. The vineyards cover seventeen hectares and are home to vines aged between thirty and fifty years. The roots plunge into marl-limestone soils, enriched by clay-pebble. This unique geological makeup gives the wine a solid mineral component, conveying the soil’s identity in an elegant, well-defined structure.

Production method

La Pousse d’Or manages its own vineyards and strictly follows biodynamic viticultural practices, working with full respect for the natural ecosystem. The Pinot Noir grapes are harvested and handled with great care during fermentation stages, to preserve the grape’s original expression. The entire cycle of amphora vinification represents the technical core of production. This method favours the extraction of a well-defined tannic texture and delivers volume without losing palate tension.

Tasting notes

In the glass, it displays a clear hue, foreshadowing an aromatic profile marked by intense black fruit aromas. The palate entry is dense and enveloping, driven by a complex development that fills the mouth with precision. The pronounced tannins are well integrated and perfectly counterbalanced by a lively savoury vein that extends the finish. Overall, the wine offers a balanced sip, supported by good acidic tension.

Food pairings

Its rigorous character makes it an ideal partner for enhancing grilled red meats, where the meat’s texture harmonises beautifully with the wine’s backbone. The fresh, earthy quality works to balance tasty dishes and long-cooked preparations, cleansing the palate after every bite. Perfect alongside the great classics of Burgundy cuisine, it finds an exceptional match in boeuf bourguignon. In this pairing, the wine’s structure complements the sweetness of the meat and the reduction of the cooking juices.

When to serve it

Ideal for dinners featuring hearty ingredients, this wine gives its best when food requires an equally robust liquid companion. Its temperament allows full enjoyment during mindful table drinking, but it also has all the characteristics to benefit from a long bottle aging. Poured with care, it opens up progressively, revealing details of the original grape variety. Best enjoyed on calm sharing occasions to fully grasp its ageing potential.
