The origins of Fontanafredda can be found in a love story of bygone times, namely between the first king of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy, and Bela Rosin, a woman of humble origins whom the monarch wanted as his wife, despite the difference in rank. He granted her the title of Countess of Mirafiori and Fontanafredda, naming the hunting estate that was mainly home to Nebbiolo vineyards in the Serralunga d'Alba area after their two children.
Among the many wines produced by Fontanafredda, the Barolo Serralunga d'Alba (94 pt WE) was the first to be mentioned in a gallery of true exceptional wines, while the Barolo Vigna La Rosa (91 pt RP) majestically stands out for its grace and finesse on all major occasions. The Barolo Proprietà in Fontanafredda (94 pt WE) is also outstanding and well worth trying along with the Barbera d'Alba Raimonda and Langhe Nebbiolo.
