There is an clear connection between the Mazzei family and the history of Chianti Classico: the first document known for the use of the "Chianti" denomination dates back to 1398 and it has the signature of Ser Lapo Mazzei. When in 1435 the niece Smeralda married Piero of Agnolo da Fonterutoli, the destiny of the family is fulfilled thanks to the acquisition, through the marriage, of Chianti property: it will become the beating heart of the company. Since then, for 24 generations, the Mazzei have been producing wine at Castello di Fonterutoli, an ancient Florentine bulwark few kilometers away from Castellina in Chianti, whose charm has remained unchanged over time.
This is where wines such as Siepi (95 pt JS) are born from the fortunate intuition of implanting Merlot as an ideal complement of Sangiovese; the Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli (97 pt Decanter), a real Château of Chianti Classico. Another emblematic flagship is the Ser Lapo (95 pt JS) a Chianti Classico Riserva with a compact and authentic touch.
