The history of Leone De Castris is closely tied to Five Roses, the first Italian rosé wine to be bottled and marketed in Italy in 1943.
The name echoes a district in the Salice Salentino feud, "Cinque Rose", as well as the tradition that for many generations, every Leone De Castris had five children. At the end of the last war, General Charles Poletti, commissioner for the supplies of the Allied forces, requested a large supply of rosé wine. Italian, yes, but with a strictly American name. Thus, Five Roses was born.
