Castello Tricerchi
Castello Tricerchi is a wine estate in Montalcino with its headquarters in a historic castle on the Via Francigena, on the northern side of the appellation, in the locality of Altesi. Built in the 13th century by the Altesi family, the castle was completed in 1441 by the Tricerchi, a family of the Sienese oligarchy who sat in the Council of the Nine and who, under the Medici, were granted noble rank and the administration of Montalcino.
Over the centuries the castle was a landmark for pilgrims bound for Rome and houses the Chapel of the Virgin of the Veil. In the nineteenth century the property passed to Julio Squarcia, forefather of the current family, and in 1982 the castle was declared part of Italy's historic and artistic heritage. It is still the home of the direct descendants, the Squarcia family.
The estate extends over 400 hectares, 13 of which are dedicated to Sangiovese Grosso. Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino mature in oak casks in the castle's historic cellars.
The range includes Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino AD 1441, dedicated to the year the castle was completed, Rosso di Montalcino and Iuli'o. History, nobility and terroir make Castello Tricerchi one of Montalcino's most fascinating estates.
