Château Leoville-Barton
Château Léoville Barton is a Second Grand Cru Classé of 1855 in the Saint-Julien appellation, in the heart of the Médoc, and has belonged to the Barton family for nearly two centuries. The dynasty began with Thomas Barton, who left Ireland and in 1725 founded his first wine merchant firm in Bordeaux, earning the nickname "French Tom".
His grandson Hugh Barton purchased Château Langoa in 1821 and in 1826 a parcel of the famed Léoville estate, renamed Léoville Barton. In the twentieth century, Anthony Barton, born in Ireland and relocated to Bordeaux in 1951, took the reins of the vineyards in 1983. Today the estate is led by Lilian Barton Sartorius, ninth generation, with her children: Mélanie, the dynasty’s first oenologist, and Damien. In all, ten generations and over three centuries of history.
The vineyard stretches over 50 hectares of gravel on clay subsoil, with a high proportion of old vines. The blend is the classic Médoc: Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).
Faithfulness to tradition, family continuity and a great terroir make Château Léoville Barton one of the most classic and elegant expressions of Saint-Julien.
