Château Phélan-Ségur
Château Phélan Ségur is a major estate in Saint-Estèphe, in the Médoc. Its history is tied to Bernard Phelan, a young Irish wine merchant who left Tipperary at the end of the eighteenth century and settled in Bordeaux: in 1805 he purchased Clos de Garramey and in 1810 the domaine Ségur de Cabanac, whose origins go back to the mid-18th century.
On his death in 1841, the estate passed to his son Frank Phelan, who devoted his life to the quality and reputation of the wines and served as mayor of Saint-Estèphe for thirty years. At the beginning of the 20th century, the château took the name Phélan Ségur. After more than thirty years under the stewardship of the Gardinier family, the property today belongs to Philippe Van de Vyvere.
The vineyard stretches over 70 hectares of clay-gravel on ridges and plateaus, near the Gironde estuary, which tempers winters and summers, and it borders the vineyards of Château Montrose and Calon-Ségur. The blend comprises Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Merlot (39%), Cabernet Franc (1.5%) and Petit Verdot (1.5%).
Alongside the grand vin, Frank Phélan and La Croix Bonis are produced. Château Phélan Ségur is an elegant, generous expression of Saint-Estèphe.
