Boekenhoutskloof
Boekenhoutskloof is a historic South African winery located in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley in the Western Cape, founded in 1776 by French Huguenot refugees. The name means 'gorge of the Boekenhout', the Cape’s indigenous beech.
The estate’s revival dates back to 1993, when the property was purchased and restored and the vineyards were replanted with varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier. Today the winery is led by Marc Kent, technical director and managing partner, alongside winemaker Gottfried Mocke.
The Boekenhoutskloof premium range is dedicated above all to Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, from vineyards in Franschhoek and the Swartland, and to a celebrated white Semillon partly sourced from old vines dating to 1902. Alongside this line stand out The Chocolate Block, a modern, iconic blend based on Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Grenache and Viognier, noted for aromas of chocolate, blackberry and spice; The Wolftrap, Rhône-inspired wines offering outstanding value; and Porcupine Ridge, the winery’s everyday line. The group also oversees the prestigious Porseleinberg and Cap Maritime projects.
Boekenhoutskloof has been named Winery of the Year multiple times by Platter’s guide and has been included by critic Tim Atkin among South Africa’s First Growths.
Heritage, great vineyards and the ability to interpret Syrah at the highest level make Boekenhoutskloof a benchmark name in South African wine.
