Lugana
One of the most popular white wines, Lugana originates between the provinces of Brescia and Verona, in a homogenous, predominantly flat area, the formation of which was caused by an immense glacier that descended from the Adige valley. This glacier later retreated several times and returned in later periods to form today's Lake Garda and the hills adjacent to it. The fertile soils of a clayey matrix gradually become sandier in the hillier areas and give Lugana body and warmth, acidity and flavour and vigorous, clear-cut aromas, somewhere between almond and citrus. The microclimate is influenced by the temperate breezes of Lake Garda and is ideal due to the mildness and low incidence of temperature excursions between day and night.
The vine used to produce this wine is a local variety of Trebbiano, Turbiana. It is a grape variety capable of expressing itself with versatility in both classic white and sparkling versions. The current production regulations provide for no less than five types of Lugana: the basic version, the Superiore, the Riserva, the Vendemmia Tardiva and the Spumante. In general, Lugana wines are harmonious and full-bodied whites, fresh and easy to drink, as well as having good ageing potential.
