Born in Baltimore, Maryland, with a degree in history, during a trip to France he became passionate about wine and in 1978 he began to publish a newsletter called The Baltimore-Washington Wine Advocate , in which he wrote tasting reports.

Worldwide success came in 1979, when he published for the first time the bimonthly magazine The Wine Advocate , distributed in the USA and in 37 countries.
