Imagine two American brothers, John and Harry Mariani, who, after inheriting one of the most prestigious wine import companies in the United States, “Banfi Vintners”, founded by their father in New York in 1919, decide to fulfill the dream of becoming wine producers in one of the most fascinating (and at the time untapped) areas of Tuscany, Montalcino. They do so by envisioning a revolutionary winery, starting from a blank slate. They are driven by a visionary spirit, as testified by John’s words, who on the day of the winery’s inauguration declared his wish to “do something good for Italy, something good for America, and something good for everyone who loves quality wines.” On this foundation, in 1978, Banfi was born in Montalcino. Relentless research, a strong pioneering spirit, and sustainability—pillars at the core of the company’s philosophy—have made Banfi a leading player in Montalcino’s history. It is largely thanks to the contribution of this winery that Brunello has progressively become a symbol and an icon of Montalcino and of Italian wine, first in America and then throughout the world. Today, at the helm of Banfi, ensuring continuity of the family’s presence in the company, is the third generation, led by Cristina Mariani. Banfi’s wines, which speak to the passage of time in wooden casks, are made from selected grapes harvested exclusively from the estate’s specialized vineyards. Deeply rooted in the land and its sustainable stewardship, they have long been acclaimed by national and international critics: from Brunello di Montalcino “Poggio alle Mura” to Toscana “Belnero”, one of the winery’s most successful labels.
