Argentina's winemaking history dates back over 400 years, beginning in 1541 when the first Spanish vine was planted, thanks to Jesuit Missions, near the Atlantic coast and along the Rio de la Plata. For a long time, the most common grape was the Criolla, a variety of Spanish origin. It wasn't until the 19th century, with the influx of European migrants, that numerous French, Italian, and Spanish grape varieties arrived in the new continent, transforming local viticulture.

Among them, one adapted remarkably to Argentina's climate and soils: Malbec. Originally from the southwest of France, it is the result of a spontaneous cross between Prunelard and Magdaleine noir de Charentes and is still cultivated in Cahors and in small percentages in Bordeaux. Along with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, and Croatina among reds, and Torrontés, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Moscato, Palomino, and Pedro Ximénez among whites, have also acclimatized well. Today, about 80% of Argentine vineyards are dedicated to red grape varieties, with Malbec as the country's emblematic grape.

The Heart of the Andes: Mendoza and Beyond

The most famous wine region is Mendoza, located in the central part of Argentina, bordering Chile. The vineyards are located between 600 and 1,200 meters above sea level and rest on alluvial soils rich in pebbles and volcanic-origin sands, very permeable and mineral. Among the most renowned subzones are Maipú and the Valle de Uco, known for elegant and refined wines. Here, Malbec produces structured reds, with intense aromas of plum and forest fruits. On the palate, they are rich, mature, and concentrated wines, with well-present tannins and a balanced freshness. Harmonious and persistent, it is a perfect red with grilled or roasted meats.

Salta and Patagonia: The New Faces of Argentine Wine

In addition to Mendoza, the regions of San Juan and La Rioja also produce quality wines. Particularly interesting is Salta, in the north of the country, where the vineyards climb above 1,500 meters, in a cold climate with strong temperature variations. It is one of the most suitable areas for whites, especially Torrontés, which achieves expressions of great finesse here. Another emerging area is Patagonia, particularly the Río Negro region. The climate here is dry and arid, with significant temperature variations, and the soils are poor, alluvial, or stony, rich in skeleton and well-drained. Thanks to these conditions, the region is establishing itself as an ideal territory for cultivating white grape varieties, for both still and traditional method sparkling wines.
