The Vitryat is one of the most easterly zones of winegrowing Champagne, spreading around the town of Vitry-le-François in the Marne department. It is a relatively small area compared to the region’s major sectors, yet it has a strong identity tied to Chardonnay. The vineyards occupy above all the chalky hills that ring the local communes, where the limestone subsoil and favorable exposures aid vine cultivation. Its peripheral position with respect to Champagne’s main centers has not prevented the Vitryat from developing its own winegrowing tradition, focused above all on fresh, distinctly fruit-driven wines.

Where the Vitryat is located

The Vitryat lies in the southeastern part of the Marne department, east of the Montagne de Reims and northwest of the Côte des Bar. The vineyard area is distributed in several small sectors around Vitry-le-François, within a landscape of gently rolling hills and broad agricultural areas. As in other parts of Champagne, the subsoil is strongly influenced by the presence of craie, the porous limestone chalk that characterizes much of the viticultural basin. This soil can store water and release it gradually to the roots, helping to balance the vine’s water supply.

A fragmented vineyard among the chalky hills

Unlike more compact areas such as the Côte des Blancs, the Vitryat features a vineyard area fragmented across several communes and set within a predominantly agricultural landscape. The vines are concentrated above all on the best-exposed slopes, where the incline favors drainage and allows greater exposure to light. The presence of craie creates an evident link with other Champagne zones, but local conditions and the distance from the main winegrowing centers contribute to giving the Vitryat a distinct character. The modest size of the area means that differences between individual villages are often less familiar to the general public, while remaining important for local producers.

The communes of the Vitryat

Among the main vine-growing communes of the Vitryat are Vitry-en-Perthois, Bassuet, Bignicourt-sur-Saulx, Changy, Glannes, Loisy-sur-Marne, Maisons-en-Champagne and Merlaut. The vineyard surface is relatively small and production remains far more limited than in Champagne’s major zones. The Vitryat does not include any communes classified as Grand Cru or Premier Cru: village classification is therefore not the lens through which to read the area. What chiefly characterizes the Champagnes from this zone are the type of soil, vineyard exposure, the grape variety used and the choices of individual producers.

The grape varieties of the Vitryat

Chardonnay is the most representative grape of the Vitryat and the one that has most helped define the area’s modern identity. The chalky soils and Champagne’s cool climate allow grapes with good acidity and balanced aromatic maturity to be obtained. Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are present to a lesser extent and complete the local varietal heritage. The predominance of Chardonnay makes particularly interesting the cuvées that highlight its origin, while blends with the black-skinned varieties allow for more structured and fruitier Champagnes.

The style of Vitryat Champagnes

Vitryat Champagnes are generally characterized by freshness, purity of aroma and a clearly recognizable fruit character. Chardonnay can express notes of citrus, apple, pear and white flowers, accompanied by a lithe structure and good tension on the palate. With aging, nuances of dried fruit, honey and pastry may appear, while cuvées that include Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier can develop greater breadth and a more pronounced fruit component. These are versatile Champagnes at the table: the fresher expressions pair well with starters, fish and shellfish, while the more structured cuvées can accompany poultry, white meats and cheeses.
