Description
What kind of wine it is
Tignanello 2023 by Marchesi Antinori is one of the most internationally renowned Italian red wines and is a cornerstone of Tuscan wine. It is produced mainly with Sangiovese and a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, a blend that combines local identity, aromatic depth, structure, and elegance. This intense and refined red expresses the innovative style of the Antinori family, capable of interpreting Chianti Classico with a modern and distinctive vision.
Where it comes from
It originates in the Tenuta Tignanello, in the heart of Chianti Classico, between the valleys of Greve and Pesa. The namesake vineyard extends over calcareous soils with the presence of alberese and galestro, at an altitude between 350 and 400 meters, with a southwest exposure. The estate’s soil and climate conditions, combined with natural ventilation and notable temperature swings, favor a balanced ripening of the grapes and help define the wine’s elegant, deep, and mineral character.
How it is produced
The 2023 vintage was marked by a moderately cold and dry winter, followed by a cool and rainy spring from late April to the second half of June. The summer, warm but steady and without significant heat spikes, promoted excellent vegetative balance in the vines, while moderate August rainfall and stable conditions in September and October led to positive grape ripening. Harvest began around September 20th with Sangiovese and was completed in early October with the Cabernets; in the cellar, musts ferment in truncated conical tanks with careful maceration to preserve aromas, extract color, and achieve refined tannins. Malolactic fermentation follows in barriques, and then the wine matures for about thirteen months in French oak barrels and, to a much lesser extent, Hungarian oak, followed by further bottle aging.
Tasting notes
In the glass it reveals an intense ruby red color. On the nose, notes of ripe cherry, pomegranate, and orange emerge, accompanied by delicate floral hints of hibiscus and violet. The aromatic profile is enriched with nuances of cocoa, graphite, white pepper, and red currants, offering a broad, elegant, and layered bouquet. On the palate, the entry is vertical and vibrant, with a juicy and enveloping mid-palate, sweet and silky tannins, and a savory, long and persistent finish marked by notes of blood orange and toasted hazelnut.
Food pairings
It pairs well with roast red meats, game, braised dishes, pappardelle with wild boar, Florentine steak, dishes with mushrooms or truffle, and aged cheeses.
When to serve it
Tignanello 2023 can be enjoyed in the early years after its release, when it expresses energy, freshness, and aromatic intensity, but it also has a remarkable potential for aging in the bottle. Over time, the fruity and spicy components will tend to blend with more complex and mature notes, offering an increasingly deep and harmonious tasting experience. It is best served in large glasses, after proper aeration, to enhance its structure, elegance, and persistence.
