Description
El Castro de Valtuille Mencía Joven is a red wine produced in the heart of Bierzo, made from a mosaic of about 352 micro-parcels located around Valtuille de Abajo. The vines, grown on mixed soils rich in clay, sand, and organic matter, are over 85 years old and give rise to a wine that represents the true collective expression of the territory. The blend is predominantly Mencía, enriched with Alicante Bouschet, white grapes, and other native varieties.
Vinification involves manual harvesting of the grapes, destemming, and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, with temperature control between 22 and 24°C. After about 25 days, the wine is racked and undergoes malolactic fermentation. Afterwards, the blend is assembled and the wine is aged for three months in wooden barrels before bottling.
On the palate, it is fresh and lively, with fruity notes of cherry and raspberry, floral hints, and a slight spiciness. The tannic texture is soft, and the finish is agile and harmonious, perfect for immediate enjoyment but also able to offer satisfaction after a few years in the bottle.
Ideal with cured meats, grilled white meats, or flavorful first courses of Mediterranean cuisine.
