Description

What type of wine is it

Sessantanni Old Vines by San Marzano is a red wine produced in Apulia exclusively from Primitivo grapes. This wine, belonging to the Primitivo di Manduria designation, stands out for its smooth and full-bodied profile. The technical vinification, combined with oak maturation, gives it a solid structure and a well-defined tannin to clearly express the characteristics of the type. On the palate, it maintains an intense and rich sip, characterized by distinct spicy notes and excellent persistence.

Where it comes from

This Primitivo di Manduria originates from old vines located in the municipalities of San Marzano and Sava. The territory plays a central role in the development of Primitivo grapes, cultivated in this area to obtain highly concentrated reds. The specific geographical location allows the vines to produce grape clusters capable of delivering a wine with ripe fruit, solid structure and an integrated tannic framework, consistently reflecting the Apulian winemaking identity.

How it is produced

Production begins with the manual harvest of Primitivo grapes around the second half of September. Fermentation takes place in rotofermenters at a controlled temperature between 24 and 26 °C for about ten to fifteen days, to enable proper extraction of color and phenolic components. At the end of fermentation, the wine is aged in barriques for 12 months to define the final structural and aromatic profile.

Tasting notes

It displays an intense ruby red color with a deep shade. The nose opens with clear aromas of plums and cherries, enriched by spicy notes of tobacco derived from barrel aging. On the palate, it is smooth and full-bodied, supported by noble and balanced tannins. The prolonged finish reveals a lingering aftertaste of cocoa, coffee, and vanilla, confirming the intensity and aromatic consistency of the tasting.

Food pairings

The intensity of its profile makes it especially suitable to accompany red meats and game, as it adequately balances the most flavorful and structured dishes. It is also a suitable pairing for rich first courses, particularly when meat sauces require a structured and persistent wine. The richness of its tertiary notes also qualifies it as a meditation wine, to be appreciated on its own for its complex aromatic nuances.

When to serve it

Sessantanni Old Vines is indicated when you desire a full and lingering sip, consistent and satisfying in the glass. It is the right choice for a menu focused on red meats and game, able to stand up to a bold aromatic profile. It is equally well suited for a slow tasting, a situation that allows you to appreciate the evolution of tertiary notes and the influence of barrel aging in enhancing the wine’s complexity.
