Description

What kind of wine is it?

Valtellina Superiore Grumello Nino Negri is a red wine made exclusively from Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) grapes grown in Valtellina. The vinification takes place in stainless steel with post-fermentation maceration, and is completed by a total ageing of 24 months, including a period in French and Slavonian oak barrels. The profile is dry and austere, with spicy and balsamic notes supported by savouriness and elegance, designed to complement meals with meat and cheese.

Where does it come from?

This wine originates in Valtellina, north of Lake Como, in the province of Sondrio, in the Grumello subzone. The name recalls the Latin “grumus”, meaning hill or mound, and refers to the local geography. Its Valtellina origin places the wine in an Alpine Lombard context, with vineyards running along the valley and a style reflecting the territorial character of the local Nebbiolo.

How is it produced?

The Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) grapes are harvested exclusively by hand in October. After harvesting, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by post-fermentation maceration. The total ageing lasts 24 months, at least one of which in French and Slavonian oak barrels, allowing the wine to evolve and integrate its ethereal and spicy characters.

Tasting notes

To the eye, the colour is ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose reveals ethereal and spicy hints, with notes of clove and cinnamon, followed by balsamic and red fruit nuances. On the palate, it is dry and austere, pleasantly savoury, with an elegant and clean finish that retains the spicy character without making the sip heavy.

Food pairings

It pairs well with lamb, kid, and roasted red meats, where the structure and dryness enhance succulence. It also shows coherence with aged cheeses thanks to a savoury and spicy profile that matches well with long maturation.

When to serve it

It is best suited to lunches and dinners featuring roasts and aged cheeses, highlighting a distinctly dry and aromatic profile. The spicy and balsamic notes make it especially enjoyable in cooler months. When serving, large glasses help the aromas to express themselves, and a table not overly seasoned allows the finesse of fruit and spice to shine.
