Description

What kind of wine it is

Pian del Prete presents a Nobile di Montepulciano conceived with a contemporary approach, designed to appeal even to palates accustomed to a more approachable style. The ruby color and structure remain those of a great Tuscan classic, yet the interpretation focuses on a supple drinkability and generous fruit, without forsaking the historic identity of its place of origin.

Where it comes from

The grapes come from the hills surrounding Montepulciano, in southern Tuscany, an area historically devoted to producing elegant, long-lived reds. The vineyards lie between 300 and 450 meters above sea level, with south and southwest exposures that foster ideal ripening, on medium-textured clay-limestone soils rich in ancient marine sediments—elements that give the wine structure and a marked sense of place.

How it is made

The blend is based on Sangiovese, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile, together with Merlot. Harvesting takes place in two distinct stages: a first pick at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and the fragrance of the fruit, followed by a second, slightly later pick to increase concentration and aromatic richness. After gentle destemming, fermentation takes place in stainless steel at controlled temperature, with maceration on the skins for about twenty-five to thirty days. The wine then ages for about six months in French barriques of second and third use, followed by further bottle aging.

Tasting notes

The color is a bright, intense ruby red with slight garnet highlights. On the nose, aromas of ripe cherry, woodland berries and plum open up, accompanied by spicy nuances, delicate hints of vanilla and light balsamic tones. On the palate it is soft and velvety, with sweet tannins and a surprisingly seamless drinkability, supported by a well-judged balance between freshness and fruit concentration.

Food pairings

The softness of the tannins and the generosity of the fruit make this Nobile di Montepulciano a natural partner for grilled red meats and seasonal roasts. It also pairs elegantly with a hearty Tuscan ragù or braised wild boar, while its spicy profile finds common ground with aged cheeses such as Tuscan pecorino. It is a versatile choice for a convivial table featuring robust yet not overly rich dishes.

When to serve it

Serve at around 16-18°C, ideal for convivial lunches and dinners where meat dishes take center stage. Given its youthful style and fruit-forward character, it benefits from a brief opening in advance to let the aromas relax. This is a wine suited both to informal occasions and to more curated tables, thanks to a modern balance between immediate pleasure and the appellation’s recognizable identity.
