Château Angelus
Château Angelus is one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Émilion, stewarded by eight generations of the de Boüard de Laforest family. The family history in Saint-Émilion begins in 1782 with Jean de Boüard de Laforest, a bodyguard to the King; in 1920 Maurice de Boüard de Laforest added to the property a three-hectare plot called "l'Angelus", from which the estate takes its name. The name evokes the Angelus prayer, marked by the ringing of bells in the morning, at noon and in the evening; hence a bell features prominently on the label. In the first Saint-Émilion classement of 1954, Château Angelus was declared Grand Cru Classé. Since 1985, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, a winemaker trained at the University of Bordeaux, has led its renewal, and since 2012 the estate has been run by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, the eighth generation. The vineyard lies less than a kilometer from the bell tower of Saint-Émilion, at the foot of the southern slope, with full southern exposure. Here Cabernet Franc, the signature variety of the great wines on this side, shows its best from the oldest vines. The chai Carillon, in operation since the 2019 harvest, operates entirely by gravity and is BREEAM-certified. Family tradition, research and a deep bond with the terroir make Château Angelus one of the most iconic names in Saint-Émilion and Bordeaux wine.
