Villa Lanata
Villa Lanata is an estate in Cossano Belbo, in the province of Cuneo, in the heart of the Valle Belbo, a corner of the Langhe whose hills are covered with Moscato vineyards. The estate takes its name from the villa that overlooks the vineyards on the hill known as “la Rovere”, built around 1880 on the initiative of the Genoese cardinal Giovanni Battista Lanata, who used it as a summer residence.
After the cardinal’s death, the heirs continued to visit the villa and run the estate until the Second World War; afterwards the property was slowly abandoned. In the 1970s the property passed to the Martini family, who restored the villa to its former glory, thanks above all to the commitment of Eleonora Martini, third generation.
The estate owns 53 hectares of vineyard between Cossano Belbo and Castino, 45 of which planted to Moscato, largely on the steep hillside around the villa. From the highest vineyards, towards the Santuario della Madonna della Rovere, comes the Moscato d'Asti Cardinale Lanata. Alongside Moscato, the Valle Belbo’s signature variety, Chardonnay is grown, which in Piedmont is usually the first to be harvested. The vineyards and the historic cellar lie within the buffer zone of the winegrowing landscapes of the Langhe and Roero, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
The range includes Moscato d'Asti, Langhe DOC Chardonnay, Barbera d'Asti DOCG Superiore and Piemonte DOC Rosso. Among the accolades, the 2018 Chardonnay received 92 points from James Suckling.
History, landscape and family passion come together at Villa Lanata, on the hills of the Valle Belbo.
