Mustilli
Mustilli is a historic winery in Sant'Agata de' Goti, in the Beneventan Sannio in Campania, tied to a family that has lived in this village for centuries. As early as the 1800s, Cesare Mustilli planted the first vineyard on the hill of Santacroce, beginning a story that made Falanghina the symbol of the estate and of the territory.
The turning point came in the 1960s, when Leonardo Mustilli devoted himself full-time to viticulture in the historic cellars carved into tuff and chose to focus on the indigenous grape varieties of the Sannio. In the 1970s he rediscovered Falanghina and in 1979 Falanghina Mustilli was born, presented by the estate as the first varietal Falanghina to be vinified and bottled; Luigi Veronelli called it "a true and precious gem". In 1993 the DOC Sant'Agata de' Goti was established, for which the Mustilli are the sole producers.
The vineyards, on clay-limestone soils, are planted to Falanghina, Greco, Aglianico and Piedirosso with an approach that respects the land: winter tillage for drainage, green manuring or organic fertilization, and plant protection in line with integrated pest management guidelines. Since 2002, production has taken place in a new winery outside the historic center, while beneath the family’s 18th-century palazzo the ancient tuff-cut cellars safeguard the archive of vintages and selected wines.
The range includes Falanghina del Sannio DOC, Greco, Aglianico and Piedirosso del Sannio DOC, along with flagship labels such as Vigna Segreta, a Falanghina aged on the lees, Cesco di Nece, an Aglianico aged in wood, and Artus, a Piedirosso fermented and aged in amphora. Completing the lineup are the bottle-refermented sparkling wines Regina Isabella and Regina Sofia, the passito Phileno and a traditional-method rosé sparkling wine. Among the stated accolades, the estate counts over one hundred.
Today Mustilli is led by sisters Paola and Anna Chiara, agronomists, while Marilì Mustilli has transformed the family palazzi into hospitality venues, with tours, tastings, and art and cultural events. "Vino, Arte, Accoglienza" is the motto with which Mustilli tells the story of the Sannio and its Falanghina.
